In a few words: it's just another standardized test that all high schoolers (here in the U.S. anyway) are expected to take.
Well, to be fair- it is preliminary to the SAT. That's what we actually have to take; the PSAT is like an appetizer for the main course which of course is the nastiest, hairy, big-bad-wolf in almost every highschoolers' encroaching future: the Scholastic Aptitude Test.
While I have not had the privilege of taking the SAT yet, it is in my future. For the next two or three years I will take the PSAT (as previously mentioned) which covers the three elementary core concepts known as: mathematics, critical reading, and writing skills.
Here is an amazing website for studying for the SAT AND PSAT: https://quickstart.collegeboard.com/posweb/login.jsp
Good luck to anyone who may end up taking it in the future.
